    Pool opens Memorial Day weekend

    Thanks to the 11 volunteers who uncovered the Park Stockdale junior Olympic-size pool on Saturday.

    Volunteers were board members Tom Bell, Matt Coleman, Bill Zobel and Jim Carnal, along with Dennis Shea, Sander Strother, John Zobel, Anthony Martinez, Kieran Dowling, Ethan Jones and Andrew Jones. The Jones brothers also teamed up to dispose of the two old concrete umbrella stands that have been replaced.

    The pool is being prepped for the summer season and will open on Saturday, May 27.

    The private pool will be open for residents and their guests from noon-8 p.m. May 27-29. It will reopen daily on Friday, June 2, through Aug. 13 and then weekends and holidays through Labor Day.

    Residents may invite two guests each with a limit of three accompanying residents with six guests.

    If you need a key card for entrance, see Sharyn in the office 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. MWF. She will be working Memorial Day. Renters need to bring ID and proof of residency such as a utility bill.

    Lap swimming for residents 18 and older is available from 6 to 8 a.m. daily. No lifeguard is on duty.

    Park Stockdale needs a gate guard this summer for its private community pool.

    The adult guard checks entrance cards to admit only residents and their guests.

    Job pays minimum wage and is from noon-8 p.m. weekends and holidays.

    Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

    More than 70 residents enjoyed the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta on Friday at the pavilion on a cool Spring evening under billowy clouds.

    Children squealed with delight as they hopped in the bounce house and took swings at a piñata.

    Melissa and Jose Martinez cooked up delicious chicken and beef street tacos. They also set up the bounce house and supervised the piñata activities.

    The Park Stockdale Civic Association and Thrivent  Financial Services sponsored the family event. Thrivent donated T-shirts to volunteers.

    Organizers and volunteers included board members Kiki Contreras, Roxanne Fackler, Ana Flores and Susan Tuttle. Residents Dan Tuttle, Molly Carnal and the Martinez children also pitched in.

    The Tuttles donated popsicles for dessert.

  • Safety meeting

    Safety meeting

    Representatives from the Bakersfield Police Department will give a presentation on neighborhood safety and security issues at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, in the hall.

    The presentation at 205 Rio Bravo Drive is free and open to all Park Stockdale residents.

    The Park Stockdale Civic Association and Thrivent are sponsoring a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta for residents at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 5, at the Harrington Park pavilion.

    The event will include tacos, a pinata and a children’s bounce house.

    More than 40 children enjoyed the annual Easter egg hunt Saturday, April 8, at the park.

    Families reveled in the excitement and enthusiasm as their young charges participated in sack races, egg-and-spoon races and photos with the Easter bunny before culminating with the egg hunt. Even adults tried the three-legged races.

    Jayson Martinez was a big hit as the Easter bunny in the hour-long event. So was his mother, Melissa, who served as emcee, running the races and egg hunt.

    One hundred residents and their families enjoyed the fun in the room-temperature weather under light clouds.

    Making it all possible were volunteers or sponsors: Ana Flores, Jayson Martinez, Jose Martinez, Melissa Martinez, Bryan Nolan, Pat Nolan, Dan Tuttle, Susan Tuttle and Roxanne Fackler.

    ”I think everyone had

    a grand time,” Susan Tuttle, an organizer, said.

    The Bakersfield Family Medical Center/Heritage Physician Network is offering three types of free events to seniors from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Park Stockdale hall.

    Coffee Club is a a social hour featuring coffee and donuts. Dates are: April 3, May 8 and June 5.

    Arts and Crafts. Attendees are given a self-contained arts and crafts project that they can complete on site or take home, and a snack. Dates: April 6, May 11 and June 8.

    Health Talk Bingo is March 23, April 27, May 25 and June 22.

    RSVP is mandatory by noon the day before the event you wish to attend. Attendance is limited to 70 guests. Call (661) 846-4662.

    Park Stockdale will host its semiannual neighborhood yard sale Saturday, April 1.

    The yard sales are the first Saturday in April and October.
